But let's go back to the beginning. The son of Baron's founder, Charles Davis, developed in the early 1980s the first CAT (Computer Aided Transcribing) system. He named it the Baron Data system. This technological innovation broke the hand-transcribing barrier, giving court reporters an electronic tool that was able to read and transcribe shorthand. Of course, the size of that first system took up an entire room. Today, it fits on a desktop. Over subsequent years, the CAT system underwent significant hardware and software improvements. Today, the system enables what's called real time transcribing, allowing everyone on a computer in the courtroom to simultaneously view in-progress transcribing.
